Preparations to be a successful SAP Consultant

Here are TEN Tips and Tricks in
preparation to be
a SAP Consultant

1. Take swimming lessons
Most likely you will be thrown in the "Waters" alone,
knowing how to swim at least you will not drown.
I took swimming lessons in the School,
I had been thrown to different "Water" conditions;
So, I am not afraid of different "Water" conditions,
despite the fact that I only know the frog style.

2. Learn how to not tell the Truth
If you are like me, you will never be a successful SAP consultant,
You need to learn to not tell a lie as well as not tell the truth.
Everytime I tried something like this,
I either cannot sleep or I get sick of myself.

3. Improve your writing skills like a lawyer
When you write the Blue Print,
use your newly learned English Language skills
to manipulate the words such that it can mean
either way. The idea is get the Customer
to sign the blueprint blindly.
My Blue Print is like a thesis,
usually spelling out even the Configuration steps from the beginning,
If you do like me, you will end up in Hell
later in the project.

4. Take some Tai Chi lessons
The skill of Tai Chi at the Master level
will allow you to prosper in the field of SAP Consulting,
you can get away without doing anything when
you have achieved the levels of a Master Tai Chi.
I learn Tai Chi after I was hospitalized, working too hard on SAP.
But I never did master the Art of Tai Chi
in the work place.
Unlike many who I know don't even know Tai Chi (the Kung Fu thing)
but Tai Chi seems natural in their blood.
Learn from those Masters, please.
But if you do wish for some real Tai Chi
for health reasons, I can teach you the steps !

5. Never show SAP screens until after the Blue Print is signed
In this way, the customer is always guessing
what was said in the Blue Print.
Let them guess and you will be fine.
Don't do what I did in my projects,
which I will show how the concepts are translated
as Prototypes during the BluePrint presentations,
this will reveal all the SAP weakness and
create many challenges to you.
Don't be so stupid like me, OK.

6. Come on time but Don't go back too late
I am usually the first one to arrive in a Project site,
to be honest no one knows who comes early,
everyone will know who goes back early.
So, no early birds, don't go back on time either.
15 minutes past the working hours is a good practice.
Never start the project by staying back 2 or 3 hours late,
as you will be expected to do so the rest of the project.

7. Play Politics
I have really no idea how.
But my observations in many projects are,
the successful consultants will know how to "Kamching"
with the right persons in the Project team
and the right persons at the Customer Project team members.
In this way, you will always get the right support
when you are proposing something.
It really seems better not to fight alone.
Never Never work alone like me.
In Malaysia, you can also acquire the
very well know "Satay" technique.
By "Satay"-ing your boss, process owners, customer boss,
you are well to a good start in your SAP career,
going up.

8. Dress Professionally
Most people know how to do this, except me.
I go to work in a T-Shirt, Jeans and Sneakers.
and I don't even comb my hair.
So, I don't need to teach you.
I failed miserably in this department.

9. Be-Friend with other SAP Consultants
If you do MM, be-friend with PP, SD, FI, CO, HR consultants.
Oh, and also Basis, Security, and ABAPers,
not to mention Cloud and Hana experts,
be-friend with them too ...
Consultants who have good people skills
and wide networking are always
able to seek solutions quickly from their friends.
They know the "WAY".
Don't be like me, trying to learn everything myself,
finally, Master of None.

10. Protect your Rice Bowl
Always hide what you do, never share your knowledge.
Never be like me, sharing SAP knowledge in the Web,
that is really Stupid.
Make sure you keep the knowledge so that
you will have continuous prosperity in the SAP field
in years to come.

Of course, the above are just my
Monday Jokes.
Get a good laugh,
and be a Honest and Responsible
SAP Consultant.

Requirement Study and Solutioning for a Customer

Here is a Challenge for you
to test your "Solutioning" Skills.

The Requirement is as follows:

You need to design something so that the
waking time of a Customer is synchronized
with the Sun Rise so that he/she can
wake up and go to work on time.

An SAP Consultant provided this solution,

"Lets Re-design the house so that when the first ray
of sun hits the horizon, a signal will be transmitted
to the Satellite, a software will be written
to extrapolate the calculations with a specially
designed algorithm provided by SAP's APO system,
this algorithm will be so powerful and intelligent
that you don't need to understand it.
This is quite complex as it will involve
more than Mixed-Integer Linear Programming
as well as Genetic Algorithm.
The results from the combined Algorithms will then
be CIFted (Core-Interfaced) back to the backend
ERP system where a program will be written to automatically
generate a Maintenance Notification in the
Plant Maintenance with a default Task Code from the Task Catalog
where by the document will be
beamed using a separate module which requires
development as it will trigger a signal to a
head band which the customer must wear during
his/her sleep, In this way, the customer
will 100% wake up on time everyday, see
All these will be provided in the Hana Solution
so all calculations are done in the Speed of Hana"

The Samsung Smart Phone Sales Man
would say,
Please buy any Samsung Smart Phone
which has an Alarm
(which by the way can be sync to
the time of SunRise)

(A version of this SAP Joke I heard
from an Indian Consultant when
teaching in SAP Singapore)

Lets Log in to the SAP Cloud ...

Planet SAP
moved into the Cloud in 2012.
It was the beginning of a new Era,
as even I myself
moved all my things into the Cloud
in the same year.

No more failing hard disk,
or a need to duplicate data to multiple hard disk
anticipating possible failures of the old one.
All you need to do is now to
duplicate your data into multiple Clouds.

I follow SAP into the Clouds,
I was a dedicated SAP disciple,
I am also very much a Cloud person now.

Even now, when I teach SAP classes,
I would always say, lets log into the Cloud
first thing in the morning.

But secretly, before the class begins,
I pray
to have a peaceful day
in the SAP Cloud.

Usually my prayers are never answered !!!
I always have BAD Cloud days.

When SAP is a bit slow in processing a transaction,
I would then say to the students
"Do not walk away from your seats yet;
well, no need to fasten your seat belts,
we are experiencing turbulence in the SAP Cloud,
be patience as it will be over soon."

Occasionally, it happens as in Murphy's Law,
as no matter how well one knows the IMG,
there are days where parameters you configured
just does not seem to work when you demo in the Application,
And it is really quite embarrassing
in front of a class when you confidently
try to show something which does not work,
you get what I mean !!!
I would then say to the students
"The SAP Cloud seems to be behaving quite strange today,
I hope we are not in the wrong Cloud,
You guys go for a tea-break and
I will check on the Cloud conditions,
trust me,
it should return to normal when you come back"
To be honest, most of the time when this happens,
it is usually a slight mistake in my configuration settings,
It is usually my silly mistakes;
When the students return from the tea break,
I would then say to the students
"The SAP Cloud was very stable, its made in Germany,
it was my silly mistake,
I was the one who caused the Cloud issues,
we are in Good SAP Cloud Conditions now"

Sometimes in the middle of an SAP Exercise,
the system just hang and log us out.
I would then say to the students
"The SAP Cloud is witnessing a terrible
thunderstorm, we have no choice
but to aboard the system or otherwise
we will "crash", this is only for your own safety,
don't worry as soon the Cloud conditions allowed,
we will take off again back into the SAP Cloud"
It did seem that such cases happen
almost around or just before Lunch Breaks !

Every Friday as I make my closing remarks
in my SAP class
I would then say to the students
"I believed you have enjoyed and learned something
in the SAP Cloud,
I know it has not been easy,
as in life there are always ups and downs,
sometimes turbulence and sometimes thunderstorms,
but don't worry
we will continue to strive
to serve you better the next time
you log into our SAP Cloud.
Have a nice weekend
while you are not in the SAP Cloud.
We look forward to
see you again in our next SAP Cloud encounter."

And by the way ...
All my teaching notes using Microsoft One Note
are in another Cloud

I have truly embraced the
Cloud culture
I am a Cloud Person
